Hannibal, Italian company belonging to Contship Italia group, will add an additional weekly rotation to its Melzo-Rotterdam route. Starting June 10, 2024, the company will operate daily round-trip services from Monday through Saturday, offering more intermodal transport capabilities between Italy and the Netherlands.
The service expansion from five to six weekly rotations aims to respond to the increasing demand for rail transport solutions between the RHM (Rail Hub Milano) and the Rotterdam Botlek C.ro terminal. This route is vital for connecting one of Europe’s key economic corridors, and the increased frequency will offer customers more flexible scheduling options.
With these additional services, Hannibal improves logistical efficiencies and offer more consistent connections for shipments moving between Italy and northern European destinations. The Rotterdam-Botlek terminal is linked to key maritime routes, including direct services to the UK and Ireland, which could reduce the need for additional truck haulage from rail terminals to ports.
The schedule with increased frequency will support a variety of container types and semi-trailers meeting the P400 profile standards. By increasing the frequency of these rail services, Hannibal wants to shift the equivalent of 240 trucks per week from road to rail. This change is projected to remove around 11,500 trucks from the roads annually, contributing to a significant reduction in emissions compared to traditional road transport methods.
