The rail route covers the Gioia Tauro–Verona corridor in approximately 24 hours. The operation is based on temperature-controlled containers designed to transport perishable goods, including fruit and vegetables. These containers move directly between port and inland terminal without transhipment, maintaining cold chain integrity throughout the journey.
According to company figures, nearly 340,000 refrigerated containers moved through Italy’s logistics system in 2024, with agri-food products representing a substantial share of that total. This rail link aims to support such flows with consistent weekly departures.
The new route connects directly with MSC’s maritime services via the Gioia Tauro terminal, creating a combined sea-rail option for producers and distributors. This bypasses road congestion and is positioned as an alternative to full truckload solutions for time-sensitive and cold-chain-dependent cargo.
