The Antwerp area is experiencing increasing traffic density, partly due to economic factors and extensive road construction projects. The ongoing work on the Oosterweel connection and the upcoming year-long closure of the Beveren tunnel toward Ghent are expected to further complicate traffic conditions, leading to inevitable detours and additional traffic jams.
Lineas has introduced the LORO connection from the MainHub terminal to address these challenges. This shuttle provides a daily rail connection from the MainHub on the right bank, passing through the Liefkenshoek rail tunnel, to quay 1700 and quay 1742 at the Deurganck dock, and back. Lineas is currently the only operator in Belgium offering such a connection.
The LORO service facilitates the transport of approximately 50,000 TEU per year. In the current year, 320 trains have moved between the two banks of the Scheldt, carrying 8,500 containers and totaling around 300,000 tons. This service aims to bypass road congestion, ensuring timely deliveries.
The MainHub terminal offers a congestion-free environment, meeting stringent safety standards with full security and monitoring. This setup provides assurance for the safety of goods during transportation and storage.
On the right bank, containers from the LORO shuttle integrate into Lineas' network, allowing continued transport to key European markets including France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, and Romania.
