TX Logistik has introduced a transport solution enabling oversized cargo to run on scheduled intermodal trains between Italy, Germany and Northern Europe.
TX Logistik operates eight weekly round trips between Rostock and Verona, linking northern Italy with Germany and providing onward connections to Scandinavia. After arrival in Rostock, the shipment was transferred by ferry to Trelleborg and then delivered by truck to the end customer in Sweden on behalf of Van der Vlist.
The concept is based on a newly patented bolster system developed by Van der Vlist. The system consists of a dedicated rail platform designed to carry machinery such as excavators, aerial work platforms and agricultural equipment that cannot be loaded into containers. The cargo is lashed and secured on the platform before being loaded onto wagons within standard piggyback operations.
TX Logistik received approval from DB InfraGo to transport out-of-gauge cargo using the large intermodal profile within the P400 loading gauge. The authorisation allows freight up to 2,990 mm wide to be carried on regular intermodal services. Unlike dedicated special trains, the solution permits rerouting in the event of disruption without requiring new route approvals.
The next phase is the plan of extending the service with onward rail operations in Sweden using trains operated by TX Logistik AB. Technical feasibility has been confirmed. TX Logistik and Van der Vlist are also examining additional corridors for deployment of the system.
