A new terminal for combined transport has officially opened at the Port of Straubing-Sand.

The inauguration on 30 September 2025 follows a short construction phase and adds a further bimodal handling point to the regional freight landscape in Lower Bavaria.

The facility, located in the southern section of the port area, covers 50,000 m² and is designed for the transshipment of containers between road and rail. It offers capacity for up to 1,000 TEU and is planned for up to ten train movements per week.

Contargo CombiTrac Straubing-Sand, a joint venture involving Contargo, SFI, and Ziegler Group, will operate the terminal close to the border of Austria and Czechia. The company was selected as operator through a public tender process. The port authority remains the project developer and infrastructure owner.

The investment is backed by the German federal government, which is covering approximately 79 percent of the total eligible cost. The overall investment amounts to around EUR 24 million, with public funding reaching about EUR 19 million.

The terminal connects directly to the port’s existing rail infrastructure and is expected to be integrated into Contargo’s broader European intermodal network. With this site, Contargo now operates 25 container terminals within its network.
