The project marks a significant step towards the implementation of freight tracking systems in the rail sector, improving traceability and data management along the transport chain.

Adif, the Spanish railway infrastructure manager, and Altia, a technology company, have announced the completion of a pilot project to track goods on rail journeys using the innovative SIMPLE technology platform. This is an important milestone in the implementation of freight tracking systems in the rail sector, providing traceability and data that adds value to the transport chain.

Promoted by Adif, Puertos del Estado, and the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma), SIMPLE is a ground-breaking initiative that aims to enable the digital and comprehensive exchange of documents, data, and information flows between all actors in the supply chain. It will be operational in January 2024 and is expected to improve logistics competitiveness, optimize routes, reduce costs, and increase efficiency and safety in the freight transport sector.

The pilot project tracked the movement of goods from the port of Algeciras to the Zaragoza Plaza freight terminal, owned by Adif. Working with SIMPLE, the Altia Control Tower solution recorded detailed information about each transport event. Traceability data include departure and arrival times, route information, and handling details at the terminals.

"This service will make it easier for customers to know where their goods are at all times, to know when they arrive and thus know when to pick them up, and it will help freight transport terminals to better plan and organize their resources. In short, it will allow for greater efficiency within the multimodal transport chain,” said Javier García Fortea, Adif's Deputy Commercial Director of Logistics Services.
