LDz Cargo has completed a log transport test from Rēzekne in eastern Latvia to Lithuania.
The transport was carried out for Ingka Investments, which manages forest resources in Latvia. The company used the trial to assess rail as an option for part of its roundwood logistics.
The shipment was completed successfully, with some stages moving faster than planned. The company used the test to assess loading arrangements, transport organisation, cross-border movement and delivery procedures.
The trial forms part of LDz Cargo’s work to diversify its freight portfolio beyond traditional cargo flows. The operator is assessing local and Baltic regional transport as a service area using Latvia’s existing railway infrastructure, regional hubs, access roads and loading areas.
Latvijas dzelzceļš said similar services could be developed on other routes in Latvia where infrastructure, loading sites and customer demand allow rail transport to replace part of road-based freight movement.
