ÖBB Rail Cargo Group relocates its Verona–Germany TransFER from Wuppertal to Duisburg and increases weekly roundtrips from six to ten, strengthening intermodal flows between Italy and Germany.

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is relocating its TransFER connection between Verona and Germany from Wuppertal to Duisburg. The change responds to the ongoing general refurbishment of Germany’s high-performance rail network, which currently limits access to the Wuppertal terminal.

By switching to Duisburg, RCG aims to maintain high-frequency, non-stop intermodal services between Italy and Germany. The Duisburg terminal offers modern infrastructure and additional capacity for storage and transhipment. According to the company, the move has enabled further volume growth with existing customers while also attracting new business.

At the same time, RCG is increasing the service from six to ten roundtrips per week as of February. The higher frequency is designed to provide greater capacity and improved planning reliability for customers moving goods along the north–south corridor.

The Verona–Duisburg TransFER handles a broad range of loading units, including 20- to 45-foot containers, 25- and 45-foot swap bodies, and craneable trailers. Dangerous goods (RID) are also accepted. With fixed timetables and competitive transit times, the service is positioned as a stable rail alternative for intermodal supply chains.

Both terminals play a strategic role within the European rail freight network. Verona serves as a key hub for north–south flows between Central Europe and the Mediterranean region, linking rail and road corridors. Duisburg, one of the world’s largest inland ports and Germany’s leading logistics hub, provides extensive onward connections across Western Europe, supporting distribution and consolidation of intermodal traffic.
