Indian Railways has begun serial production of its new D9 electric freight locomotives with a rated power output of 9,000 horsepower (6.7 MW).
With this prototype, the company is entering the rail vehicle manufacturing segment with a focus on alternative propulsion technologies.
The vehicles will replace the current fleet on the rack-and-pinion line between Montreux and the summit of Rochers-de-Naye starting in 2029.

The delivery is expected in September 2025.
In addition to the current procurement, ADY plans to extend the fleet with an additional order for 14 mainline locomotives.
Flat wagons are purposed for the transport of long rails, palletized building materials, and machinery.
