Construction on Lithuania’s most advanced Rail Baltica section is moving forward rapidly. The first rails are now being laid along an 8.8-kilometre stretch between Šveicarija and Žeimiai, scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.
"Railway construction is moving from planning to actual work – from vision to laying tracks," said Juras Taminskas, Lithuania’s Minister of Transport and Communications. "Rail Baltica is not only a modern transport project, but also a guarantee of security for the entire Baltic region."
The section’s rails, each 25 metres long, are being connected and aligned using advanced technology to meet European standards. LTG Infra, the LTG Group company responsible for Rail Baltica in Lithuania, has procured 86,200 tons of ballast, 29,500 sleepers, and 42 kilometres of rails for the works.
According to Egidijus Lazauskas, CEO of LTG Group, the project is now entering its most dynamic phase: "Territorial planning and design take time, but track laying is fast-moving. Our priority is to maintain the strong momentum achieved last year."
LTG Infra highlights that the project’s impact extends well beyond transport. "Every euro invested generates at least two euros in return for the state," said Vytis Žalimas, CEO of LTG Infra. "It delivers long-term benefits for employment, tourism, and business across the country."
The €18.8 million contract for installing the upper track structure between Šveicarija and Žeimiai was awarded to a joint venture of Leonhard Weiss GmbH & Co. KG (Germany) and Leonhard Weiss OÜ (Estonia). After track installation, the new high-speed railway will be electrified under the €2.14 billion regional contract signed in September with COBELEC Rail Baltica — the largest electrification agreement ever concluded in the Baltics.
Currently, electrification design works are underway for the Lithuanian–Polish border to Kaunas section, while construction continues along the 77 km line from Kaunas to Panevėžys, with an upcoming extension to 114 km.
Once completed, Rail Baltica will provide a fully electrified European-standard-gauge link connecting Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia with Central and Western Europe, strengthening trade, mobility, and security across the region.
