Hitachi Rail has completed its acquisition of US-based Clever Devices, expanding its digital portfolio beyond rail into wider public transport systems.

Clever Devices employs more than 600 people and expects revenues of over $220 million in 2026. Its customers include eight of the ten largest public transport agencies in North America.

The company develops intelligent transport systems used by bus and rail operators, including fleet management, passenger information and operational control tools. It also operates in Europe and South America, with activities in markets including Italy, Brazil and Chile.

Hitachi Rail plans to integrate the company’s onboard and centralised data systems into its HMAX Mobility portfolio. The acquisition adds multimodal transport functions alongside HMAX for Rail, Hitachi’s platform for monitoring and managing trains, signalling equipment and infrastructure.

“This is a key step in advancing our strategy to drive the digital transformation of public transport,” said Giuseppe Marino, Group CEO of Hitachi Rail. He said the transaction would broaden the company’s activities beyond rail and strengthen its position in North America.

Clever Devices will be led by Frank Antonysamy, who will focus on the company’s integration and further development within Hitachi Rail.

The deal follows other recent Hitachi Rail investments in North America, including a $110 million digital factory in Hagerstown, Maryland, and a CA$30 million investment in a new Canadian headquarters.
